
The alarm sounds at 02:40. The duty engineer looks at the panel. Main engine lube oil pressure is below the low threshold. The standby pump cuts in automatically. Pressure recovers.
He logs it as a pump changeover. The vessel continues passage.
Six hours later, the pressure drops again. This time the standby pump is already running. Pressure does not recover.
What started as a manageable situation is now a main engine shutdown at sea.
This sequence — one drop, pressure recovers, then drops again — is one of the most misread patterns in a ship’s engine room. The first alarm is not a pump problem. It is the engine telling you something is wrong in the system. If you stop at “standby pump cut in and pressure recovered,” you miss the real diagnosis.
What the Lube Oil System Is Actually Doing
The lube oil system has one job: keep a film of oil between every moving metal surface inside the engine. Main bearings. Crankpin bearings. Crosshead bearings. Camshaft bearings. If that film breaks down — even briefly — metal contacts metal directly. At engine speeds and loads, that contact generates heat instantly. Bearings begin to damage within minutes of running without adequate lubrication.
The system works like this. One lube oil pump draws oil from the sump and pushes it through a cooler, a filter, and then into the engine’s main lubrication gallery. From there, oil reaches every bearing through a network of drilled passages. After lubricating the bearings, the oil drains back down to the sump and the cycle repeats.
Pressure in this system is a direct measure of how well the oil is getting to where it needs to be. A drop in pressure means either less oil is being pushed in, or more oil is escaping through the system than normal.
The Four Real Causes — In the Order You Should Check Them
First: the filter.
The most common cause of a sudden lube oil pressure drop is a blocked filter. Engines fit automatic backflush filters precisely to deal with this — the filter cleans itself continuously without interrupting oil flow. But if the backflush mechanism fails, debris accumulates. Flow through the filter restricts. Pressure upstream of the filter stays normal. Pressure downstream — which is what the alarm measures — drops.
Check the differential pressure across the filter first. This reading tells you immediately whether the filter is the problem. A high differential pressure with a low system pressure points directly at filtration.
Second: the relief valve.
Every lube oil system has a pressure relief valve. Its job is to protect the pump and pipework from overpressure. It does this by opening when pressure gets too high and sending oil back to the sump.
When this valve sticks open — or when its pressure setting drifts low — it becomes a bypass. The pump is working. The filter is clean. The sump level is correct. But oil is flowing straight back to the sump instead of reaching the engine. System pressure stays low and nothing obvious explains why.
This is the most frequently missed diagnosis in a lube oil pressure event. If the filter differential pressure is normal and the pump is running correctly, check the relief valve setting and condition before moving further.
Third: the pump itself.
If the standby pump cut in and pressure recovered, then dropped again when load increased — the operating pump has lost delivery capacity. Internal pump wear increases the gap between the pump rotor and its housing. The pump continues to rotate but delivers less oil per revolution than it was designed to. At low load, this is enough to maintain pressure. At higher loads, it is not.
A pump that cannot maintain pressure at normal engine load but holds it at reduced load is a worn pump. It needs attention during the next opportunity, not the next drydock.
Fourth: the bearings.
This one is gradual and easy to miss. As engine bearings wear over time, the clearance between the journal and the bearing surface increases. Oil flows through that clearance more easily. The system needs more oil delivery to maintain the same pressure. Eventually, worn bearings reduce system pressure even when the pump, filter, and relief valve are all working correctly.
A gradual, slow drop in lube oil pressure over weeks or months — without any single event triggering it — is often bearing wear. Lube oil analysis showing increasing metal content in the same period confirms this.
The Non-Obvious Part: The Standby Pump Cuts In, and You Relax
The automatic standby pump is there for exactly one reason — to prevent bearing damage in the seconds between a pressure drop and human intervention. It is not there to allow the vessel to continue passage indefinitely on the standby pump while the cause of the drop goes uninvestigated.
When the standby cuts in and pressure recovers, the tendency is to feel that the situation is resolved. It is not. You now have no standby protection for the remainder of the passage. If the standby pump also loses delivery — for any reason — you have no backup.
The moment the standby pump cuts in is the moment the investigation starts. Not after the watch. Not at the next port. During that watch.
What to Do in the First Fifteen Minutes
Four checks, in order.
Check the sump level. A low sump level is visible immediately and fixable immediately. Rule it out first.
Check the filter differential pressure. High differential with low system pressure — filter is the issue. Switch to manual backflush if available or change over to a bypass filter if fitted, then investigate the automatic backflush mechanism.
Check the relief valve. If differential pressure is normal and the pump appears to be delivering correctly, the relief valve is the next place to look.
Check oil temperature at the engine inlet. Oil that is too hot loses viscosity. Thin oil cannot maintain the same pressure as oil at the correct temperature. A cooler problem can produce a lube oil pressure symptom even when nothing in the lubrication system has failed.
When It Needs More Than the Crew
If the above four checks find nothing — pump delivery appears normal, filter differential is acceptable, relief valve is correctly set, oil temperature is within range — and pressure is still not recovering, the problem is inside the engine. Bearing clearances, blocked oil passages, or a crankshaft issue require an engineering assessment that goes beyond what a duty watch can complete at sea.
At that point, the right call is to reduce load, protect the bearings with the time available, and arrange for a specialist at the next port. Continuing passage at full load with unexplained low lube oil pressure is how a manageable repair becomes an emergency crankshaft job.
